SUMMARY:ABC Event: Excursion to the Tsukiji Market
DESCRIPTION:Announced several times and showing up in the media\, Tokyo’s famous fish market Tsukiji is about to move to a new location. After some eighty years in the same location the market is going to move to Toyosu this autumn\, making the ABC fish market excursion one of the last chances to visit the market in the current location. Moreover with our cooperation partner\, Mr. Tomo Akiyama who runs the one and only culinary school inside Tsukiji\, we are going to visit the inside market (築地場内)\, get an explanation about how to prepare a seafood dish as well as hearing the pros and cons of the move to Toyosu. \nProgram in more detail:\nJune 19: \n9.30:\ngather at the A1 exit of Oedo line\, Tsukiji Shijo Station\, jointly walk to Akiyama’s culinary schoolThe walk only takes a few minutes\, but it is crowded and we need to start punctually at the school. \n10.00:\n15min walking tour inside Tsukiji fish market (we start the walking tour at ten sharp\, right after the busy hours!) \n10.15:\nreturn to the culinary school\, experience a Washoku/Japanese cuisine cooking demonstration and explanation of Katsuo-no-Tataki (or equivalent depending on market availability) — a popular seasonal dish in Japan.\nOur teacher for this will be a chef formerly working at the premium Japanese restaurant “Yama-Zato” (Hotel Okura) \napprox. 11.10:\nPresentation including Q&A regarding the transfer of the fish market from Tsukiji to Toyosu \napprox. 12.00:\nend of program \nPlease be aware: \n\nwe will walk inside the fish market\, so please wear casual shoes\, NO high heels or similar\, shoes are likely to get a bit dirty\nas we are moving in groups\, it is impossible to visit the market any earlier than ten in the morning. As you probably know\, access to the early Tuna Auction is limited and random\, there was no way to include this in a group program.\nwe have a limit of twenty people for this tour\, so please sign up as soon as possible. We accept up to two persons per member\, additional guests can be accepted to a waiting list.\n\nParticipation fee:\nJPY 10\,000 \nWe are looking forward to having you at the excursion for this exciting and unique program. \nPlease register by June 13\, 2018 \nRegistration: \nDeadline: \nPlease note that cancellations after the deadline or no-shows require full payment.

SUMMARY:The Business of Noh
DESCRIPTION:The next installation of the ABC’s “Business of…” seminar/excursion series is dedicated to one of Japan’s most ancient and yet mysterious art forms – NOH. Difficult to grasp for foreigners even those veterans who have lived her for long time\, the adherence to certain structures and play forms as well as the use of outdated Japanese makes it difficult to understand. \nIn the Business of Noh we will not only have the Noh master explaining in English but also telling us more about the business side of Noh. What are the financial costs and risks involved in Noh performances? Stage and actor costs? What and how do sponsors get engaged? What about the income side of a performance? \nThe Noh master guiding us through this seminar will be Naohiko UMEWAKA\, Ph.D. His family lineage in the art of Noh dates back more than 600 years. Despite these strong roots in the history of Noh\, Mr. Umewaka is known as progressive and ready to experiment with the traditional forms to contemporary tastes. Learn more about Mr. Umewaka at his website. \nThe excursion will lead us to Konno Hachimangu Shrine\, close to the Hikarie building in Shibuya. The shrine has its own Noh stage in the courtyard of the srhine. Due to the expected cold wheather\, we will just have a short introduction outside – done by Mr. Joni Waka\, an art curator often working with the shrine and also with Austrian theaters and performers. \nThe main event will be the introduction to the shrine at 9.30am\, followed by indoor explanation of Noh\, some short performances to demonstrate some Noh techniques\, the discussion of the business side of Noh and ample time for Q&A. The seminar part will conclude around 11.30. \nOptional:\n– 9.00am: a morning prayer together with the shrine priests in the inner sanctuary of the shrine. The prayer for good fortune is delivered also to regular shrine visitors and will be in Japanese only. Feel free to attend\, it will be approx. 20minutes.\n– 11.30am: joint o-bento lunch networking inside the shrine with the Noh master\, shrine representatives\, etc. \nDate:\nFebruary 8\, 2018\, Thursday \nTime:\n9:00am special morning prayer (optional)\n9:30am introduction to the shrine\, then seminar start\n11:30am end of seminar and start optional o-bento lunch networking until approx. 12:30am \nVenue:\nKonnoh Hachimangu Shrine in Shibuya \nKonnoh Hachimangu Shrine\nParticipation Fee:\nJPY 2.000 for event onlyadditional JPY 2.500 for the optional o-bento lunch networking \nPlease find the event flyer HERE! \nBusiness of Noh – Photo Gallery
